Apple iPod ‘could be charged by the human heart’

The human heartbeat could be used to power an ipod after scientists developed a tiny chip which uses the body’s own movement to generate power.

Scientists hope that as the nanotechnology used in the chip evolves, it could lead to electronics which don’t require batteries or mains power.

Hailed as a milestone, it can use tiny movements such as the pinch of a finger to generate power.

The team, presenting their findings at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, have used it to power LCD displays and diodes, as well as to transmit a radio signal once its generated power has been stored.

Dr Zhong Lin Wang, of Georgia Institute of Technology said: “This development represents a milestone toward producing portable electronics that can be powered by body movements without the use of batteries or electrical outlets.

“Our nanogenerators are poised to change lives in the future. Their potential is only limited by one’s imagination.”

The latest device is thousands of times more powerful than its predecessors, allowing scientists to take the technology out of the lab for the first time.

Dr Wang said: “If we can sustain the rate of improvement, the nanogenerator may find a broad range of other applications that require more power.”

The technology works by using zinc oxide nanowires, which generate electricity when strained or flexed.

This mean virtually any body movement – from walking to a heartbeat – can generate power.

Dr Wang’s team worked to capture and combine the power of millions of the nanowires, which are so small that 500 could fit in a human hair.

Five nanogenerators working together produced about 1 micro ampere output current at 3 volts about the same voltage generated by two regular AA batteries.

Dr Wang said: “While a few volts may not seem like much, it has grown by leaps and bounds over previous versions of the nanogenerator.

“Additional nanowires and more nanogenerators, stacked together, could produce enough energy for powering larger electronics, such as an iPod or charging a cell phone.”

flooded river

23 03 2011

Because of all the rain this week so far, our school’s river widened… a lot! and it goes way faster

apparently, a man was sleeping on the island (the part in the middle of the river with trees kind of sticking out) and when he woke up, his boat got washed away by the speed of the water, so he was clinging onto a tree yelling for help. I didn’t actually see it happen, so I’m not really sure about the details.

Kombucha (Multi-green) Review

22 03 2011

Today, I was really craving some Arizona Tea, so I went to our student store to see if they had some. Unfortunately, they didn’t. Instead they had these weird bottles of “Kombucha” in place of the Arizona Tea. I decided to take a risk and try out one of the Kombuchas and bought the Multi-Green flavor. I mean, it had tons of good things written on the bottle…like Organic, Enzymes, Raw, etc. etc. Plus, I googled it on my iphone briefly, and people seemed to like it.

I brought it back to my room and decided to open it up and try it. I twisted the cap a bit, and I heard a fizzing sound…. I took a whiff at it. Smelled gross/sour. It’s kind of like opening up a beer bottle and you get that smell…except this wasn’t beer. Cautiously, I took a sip and OH GOSH IT WAS SO SOUR. The taste rolled around in my mouth and one eye automatically shut and became watery. I could barely get it down my throat. So, I thought that time was probably a fluke and it would probably taste better the 2nd time. I cautiously took another sip and my face immediately contorted. My roommate gave me a strange look as I stumbled out of our room towards the bathroom.

Conclusion: I am never drinking this Kombucha multi-green ever again

ahh sorry

22 03 2011

Sorry for not posting for a few days! I’ve been super busy/ going through a billion emotions.

This morning….I had the hardest test of my life. I’ve failed tests before, but I mean…I totally deserve those. Today was the first time I encountered a test I studied for, but everything I studied was irrelevant to the test. I wish the teacher gave more hints as to what the midterm would’ve been like, like the format? His powerpoints were so useless. It feels like I wasted time memorizing everything on the ppts. Well, it’s over…nothing I can do about it now. I hope I got at least 50% on that test. I bs-ed 2/3 of it. Read the rest of this entry »

Stuff I Didn’t Know: Why do snails and earthworms come out when it rains?

16 03 2011

Crunch. The sound only increased my pace. I knew I just ended a snail’s life. I didn’t hear the disgusting squelch so I’m not 100% sure if I completed the deed. My eyes were peeled for these tiny shell-carrying creatures for the rest of the way to the practice rooms.

Anyways, this got me wondering “why do snails and earthworms come out when it rains?

Answer:

Snails and slugs are often just under the surface of things like boards, rocks, etc. If their area gets too damp they will surface to keep from drownding. The snails and slugs live in the dark like worms and often do not meet too many other snails or slugs to pal around with and have the big Sex time. They surface to make friends and other snails. Also when it rains there is not much sunshine and these creatures are night time creatures.

There are a ton of snails along this one path between the practice rooms building and tutoring building. The first time I walked through it at night, I noticed the ground was littered with moving snails and broken shells. I probably wouldn’t have noticed if this student around me was talking about it on her phone. Walking through the path was like a reflex test. One snail even made me twitch and stop abruptly in my path. A huge group of students behind me wasn’t really paying attention and when I reached the end, I heard a girl in the group saying “EW I stepped on a snail!” I couldn’t help smirking.

Spring Break Day 6-7

13 03 2011

I slacked off a bit on updating this. I haven’t taken any pictures lately except ones to complete my “364 days” face changing album thing.

Friday: I think this day was the highlight of my whole break. In the morning, I met up with Kellie, Tim, and Henry at Quickly for a few minutes since my mom was planning to bring our family out to get lunch at Milpitas.

Around 5:50, I met up with my friend Amy at Berkeley. (: At first, I was slightly nervous about meeting up with her since I haven’t seen her since early last year. I ended up having the most fun I’ve had in a long time which made this the highlight of my break. Too bad she had to leave me around 8 to watch a jazz concert. :/ Thanks to her though,  I got another program for my class thanks to her.

Saturday: hmmmmm didn’t do much. Went to Berkeley again since my sister’s bow fell apart. So unfortunate, but at least the person’s fixing it for free since she didn’t catch the mistake when she was rehairing our bows. Later, spent time with sis and her boyfriend playing L4D. Versus mode is tough = =; My sis and I teamed up against her bf and we still kept losing.

Spring Break Day 5

10 03 2011

Today was surprisingly, peaceful, but busy day. I spent most of it without my phone too (so no pics really). The day basically involved a ton of driving. Since 12:30, my sis and I went off to meet up with friends at Chipotle. Eating half a loaf of garlic bread before was a bad idea. The burrito barely fit in my stomach and I ended up throwing 1/8 of it away otherwise I’d probably puke. Sis and I ran a few errands- haircut, getting lined paper, picking up our car. I saw my friend B***x2 working at Quickly though. I don’t think she recognized me or remembered who I was. Then again, we haven’t seen each other for months and even then, we’ve only met each other a few times.  Read the rest of this entry »

Pause

10 03 2011

3:30 in the morning. What am I doing still awake? The house is pretty quiet now. Sometimes, it’s times like these I feel like I’m the ruler of this empty world. It’s just me and the silence. But other times, I’m just paranoid of ghosts. I just finished 2 more episodes of the Korean drama, My Girl. I guess it’s about bed time for me. G’night world.

Spring Break Day 4

8 03 2011

Today was a day of many firsts for me.

For the first time ever:
1) I sat in a tow truck.

2) I entered John Muir Hospital

Spring Break Day 3: Part 2

7 03 2011

A couple weeks ago, my sister found a recipe for Disney’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshake, which we found delightful at Disneyworld. Ever since, she’s been experimenting with the measurements (since we don’t have tablespoons, etc) and seemed to finally figure out something and made me a cup today. (:
